Getting Around

In Colonia, most points of interest, restaurants and shops are easily accessed by foot. Even the bus and ferry terminal are within walking distance of most hotels. Taxis charge approximately $5 from and to the terminals. However, the best beaches, bodegas and the Real de San Carlos are a bit further away. To get to the Plaza de Toros, about three kilometers (1.86 mi) from the city, you can either take a taxi (Av. Gral. Flores and Ituzaingó – 4522-0690) or catch one of the local buses – Sol Antigua (the red buses). The main car rental companies are Dollar (Av. Gral. Flores 234, Tel: 4522-9805 and Thrifty (Av. Gral. Flores 172, Tel: 4522-2939). Most car rental companies in Colonia also rent bicycles, scooters, go-karts and golf carts that seat up to six people; all of these are very popular choices and in fact, a lot easier to maneuver around the Historic Quarter's narrow streets.
