Posada Puerto Real

Bed & Breakfast

By Fraser Kitchell

Lulled into stupor by the three-hour camión ride down an unpaved jungle road, I felt certain I´d recieved a bum tip from a fellow traveler--a posada could not exist hidden so deeply in this expanse of national park. But our ride did end, as promised, at the leaf draped driveway of Posada Puerto Real. And standing there to meet us were two cheerful faces of the crew running the joint, eager to grab our bags as we stretched sore backs.

Puerto Real beckons first with a yawning porch, strewn with hammocks and tables with long wooden benches, making a perfect shady vantage point for the observation of the mangrove lagoon, passing foot traffic, and buzzing yard. Even the most restless traveler will feel pressed to lounge and contemplate. Adventure seekers shouldnt shy away however: a grueling eight hour jungle hike to an asphalt lake or a more relaxing waterfall hike and swim can satiate these types just fine. Wildlife addicts will take delight in the chance to see river dolphins feeding, and don't miss the beautiful and silent nightly communion of 40,000 red ibises.

A nightly stay includes three excellent meals, prepared with love in the open kitchen and combining a taste of Europe (think baguettes) and local fare (think chino and freshly procured fish or pig). The rooms are bathroom equipped, airy and clean, spartan but likely to gain color as the providers express their artistic flair. Internet is not available, but that is the whole point of the place...why would you need to check back in when you are out here?
