V!VA User‘s Description

Cumaná is a lovely little town with a quaint historical center. Despite a series of devastating earthquakes from 1684 to 1997 that have destroyed many of the historical buildings, this town that brags it was the first city built by Europeans in South America in 1521 still has much of its original charm. Mainly used by tourists as a jump-off point to Isla Margarita, Cumana has a somewhat unreliable ferry between the island and the main port. Don’t miss the impressive Castillo de San Antonio de la Eminencia fort. The modern-art museum next to the fort is also worth a visit.
