The Craziest place that I’ve been was to Bangkok Thailand for Songkran (The Thai New Year, April 13-15)
The three day water festival continues all through the night. We took water taxis to near Koh Sanh Road and it was filled with at least a 100,000 people. Everyone is throwing water on each other and some with talcum powder that get slapped on your face; the powder represents’ death and the water rebirth. And the Giant Heinekens’ represent a good time. Eat, drink and be merry but watch your wallet as pick pockets are everywhere.
In Cambodia I was invited to a Cambodian Wedding.
We jumped on "Moto" taxis and showed up in a little town near Kep.
When we arrived we meet a family that would put us up for the few days over which the wedding would take place.
The house over looked the river with a wooden floor polished smooth from 200 years of use.
When we got to the wedding the party was in full swing, we sat at a round table and quickly met our new friends. the beer flowed in true Cambodian style; Poured over a chuck of ice and shot glass after glass. The food arrived on a lazy susan and spun around with strange delights... none of the food however was what it seemed.
Spiting the food on to the floor ( as the locals would do) I tried each dish, my stomach reeling from each dish.
Finally on the 6th course what looked like a curried and BBQ'd chicken came by. It was amazing and had a slight crunch to it. joyfully I ate and enjoyed the meal. As the lazy susan spun around for a second helping I saw for the first time what I was eating.
A small birds head looked directly at me. Oh this was not chicken; oh no this was the endangered sparrow of the area bone in and cooked whole. My remorse quickly passed as I took a second helping.
Remember Abraham Lincoln said "I laugh because I must not cry" this will come in handy. While traveling you will need to laugh a lot.
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
