Be flexible and open to new experiences, you can and should plan well for your trips and experiences, but be ready for unexpected surprises and experiences. Following an unexpected piece of local advice has lead me to some of the most incredible sights in my travels. So has my guidebook.
Always travel prepared and keep a good stash of emergency cash, a copy of your passport, a phone card (international) and phone numbers in a pouch on your body at all times. A little cash, proof of identification and a couple phone numbers can get you out of almost any jam or emergency.
A historic and cultural town with both modern sights and historic significance. Part of why I love Latin America so much is the old towns that combine the old and the new with such grace. As a particularly active personality, I also like being able to experience a lot of different activities in close proximity.
