Living and trotting around the globe, seeking adventure and following my dreams is my way of life. A teacher of English as a foreign language on three continents, a Spanish and Thai speaker, home is currently in Guatemala where I live my passions as a freelance travel writer and photographer.

  • Travel philosophy

Travel with an open heart and an open mind with no expectations except to expect the unexpected.

  • Craziest place

Guatemala. Nothing can be crazier than people dancing around in the street to the rhythm of fireworks exploding from their own bodies after consuming hefty amounts of alcohol. The boom and crackle of bombas and firecrackers exploding in the streets is a daily occurrence.

  • Bizarre experience

My most bizarre cultural experience was witnessing the religious processions during the ten day Phuket Vegetarian Festival in Thailand. Locals of Chinese ancestry performed the most gruesome looking face and body piercings. These were believed to spiritually purify their souls along with a strictly vegetarian diet, meditation and abstinence from sex throughout the festival. Devotees first went into a trance-like state before the mutilation began. They drove sharp objects, including spikes, blades, saws and umbrellas through their cheeks and tongues and hung heavy objects on each end. While they were in this state apparently they felt little pain and minimal scarring resulted after. It was a very gory experience and definitely not for the weak hearted!

  • Advice

If you find yourself lost, enjoy the moment. You will always end up where you want to go and the surprises along the way all add to life's experiences. If things go wrong, stay calm, especially when dealing with officials. Be flexible and adapt as much as you can to your surroundings. Learn the do's and don't of a country and a little of the language. Be respectful of all cultures and don't speak badly of religion or politics no matter what your views are. In some countries it can land you in jail!

  • Dream destination

Anywhere that touches all the senses with language and music, aroma and taste, color and costumes and traditions and the feel of heat and salt and dust on the skin. Anywhere that it's impossible for me to lay down my camera.
