I established myself as an independent and adventurous traveller in 1989, when I became the first woman to travel the length of the Amazon river alone. 'An Amazon and a Donkey' was my first literary travel book, published by Random House in 1991. I co-authored guide books for Rough Guides and Cadogan Books in the 1980s and 90s, as well as writing freelance. I am also a professional translator (German to English). I met the father of my children in a hotel in Guatemala. Almost 20 years later, we now live in Chile and the kids love it.
