For five consecutive summers, I have hiked volcanic trails, awoken to Howler monkeys, and sought out the indigenous cultures of Central America. I lived in Costa Rica's Corcovado National Park in 2004 where I found my passion for wildlife photography. In real life, I teach high school Spanish and journalism in Florida.

  • Craziest place

    Crazy? Cadiz, Spain during Carnival is the definition of crazy. Imagine a hybrid festival that mimics the debauchery of Mardi Gras and the anonymity of Halloween. Throngs of disguised college students fill Cadiz's streets and plazas with pre-mixed sangria and other potions in the country's biggest annual botellon. The morning after, I was found sound asleep in my angel costume, sunburnt and drooling on the city's seashore.

  • Bizarre experience

    With a choreographed jolt, the man broke the neck of the chicken, which was soon thereafter served to us in flatbread with saffron, red pepper and other anonymous spices. We then sipped mint tea and watched several elderly men play chess before the five o'clock prayer time. (The Medina of Fes, Morocco)

    Never follow the gringo trail. You'll only find gringos. Oh, and, you can never have too many ziplocs.
